Supporting the youth of Mount Pearl North: An investment in our future
PARADISE, NL - With a strong provincial economy, and recent government investments in business, Mount Pearl North Candidate Steve Kent says that the youth in his District are facing a very bright future. In the recent past, a bright future for youth would have likely involved leaving the province to find high-quality jobs and to raise their families, but Provincial Government investments in youth have turned that tide.
“I have always felt strongly about helping our youth stay here. The future of our province depends on input from young people; their energy is what helps us move forward,” says Kent. “That’s why I participated in the Minister’s Advisory Committee for the Youth Retention and Attraction Strategy, and why I make sustainable growth a priority in my District. It’s not enough for youth to want to stay. They need career opportunities, and a strong community to call home.”
He notes that the PC Government has invested heavily in youth, with measures ranging from a youth portal (http://youth.gov.nl.ca/) to the Office of Youth Engagement and the Youth Advisory Committee, as well as numerous programs and policies designed to help youth create the lives they desire.
While planning for the future is an important aspect of supporting youth, Kent advises that we must also consider what youth need today. Aside from scholarships and the tuition freeze, the youth of Mount Pearl North have benefited from the Provincial Government investments in recreation. Since 2007, the District has received grants for outdoor fitness equipment, a skateboard park, upgrading basketball facilities, and adding a rock climbing wall in Paradise. In Mount Pearl, Campia Gymnastics received a grant for renovations and equipment, and Mount Pearl Minor Soccer Association received funding as part of the Recreation and Sports Strategy.
Kent says that he will continue to work with and for the youth of his District and this province, balancing their needs today with planning for tomorrow.
“Newfoundland and Labrador youth are engaged and interested in creating good lives for themselves today,” says Kent. :But they are also concerned with building their futures and the future of this province. I want to ensure that the Provincial Government provides them with the support, resources and information they need to succeed.”
