Road improvements – Working to make our streets safer

06/10/11

Since 2007, the PC Government has spent an unprecedented amount of money on infrastructure in Paradise and Mount Pearl. It's evident as I’m going door to door that our investments in road improvements have been worthwhile.

Keeping roads and sidewalks in good repair has always been a priority for the communities of Mount Pearl and Paradise, both for safety reasons and to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Over the past four years, however, we’ve seen many roads widened and resurfaced to respond to increased traffic flow. Many sidewalks have been replaced as well. This is indicative of a great level of cooperation between municipalities and the Provincial Government, which enables the people of our District to have safe, well tended roads to drive on.

In addition, the installation of new traffic and street lights helps make Mount Pearl and Paradise safer for traffic and for pedestrians than ever before. This is great for drivers, as well as people on foot - commuters, fitness conscious walkers and even politicians!

Repairing roads and ensuring safe travel along them is also important for further growth in our District. The current design and upgrades for the road improvements will allow us to accommodate more vehicles as our population grows, helping us to be ready now for continued success in the future.

I'm pleased that these improvements have been introduced during my tenure as your MHA. They are tangible evidence of the commitments the PC Party made to the people of this province - that change was coming and that we would help make people's lives easier. Repairing roads is one way to help all the constituents in my District at once, rather than helping one individual group in need at a time.

Some of the changes we've made, including improvements for families, job seekers, seniors and youth, are less visible to the average citizen, but road repair was an obvious need, and we have met that need. I hope I have the opportunity to continue as your representative. I want to work to find ways for the Provincial Government to help you and support your success, in both tangible and intangible ways.
